July 15-17, 2004
We bus to Oventik once again...
Twenty-six men crowd into a classroom where we unwittingly sit in the center of the room. We are in the middle of a circle of men and conduct our biggest group interview yet. Alfonso answers almost all our questions exclusively but there are other participants and long pauses in the interview for deliberation during which everyone speaks in Tzotzil.

July 7-14, 2004
Tickled by a drunk man
We relax and explore for a few days, getting to know our new environment. San Cristobal is something like I’ve never seen. There are many tourists but the diversity of the atmosphere doesn’t end there, the endless different tribes of native cultures have a significant presence in the city as well.

July 3-6, 2004
Big bangs from ba____d mechanics
We wanted to beat the heat and head out at 7am but Johanne needs to sleep and seems to have caught a good dose of diarrhea to go along with the fatigue.

July 1st and 2nd, 2004
Stuck in Tapana, banana
We down a Spanish omelet, say goodbye to the horses and a jogger, and move out. The road is making a beeline for the mountains and it is so hot that we can’t keep from sweating (nor do we try).
